Volunteers. Girl Scouts would simply not be possible without them. No matter what your experience, your age, or the amount of time you have to give, Girl Scouting needs you. And girls can grow from your involvement.

Leader/ Adult Volunteer Appreciation Day is April 22.

Deadlines for Adult Recognitions: January 31 for submitting nominations for Board Approved recognitions and April 1 for service unit awards.

Who can volunteer?

We invite women and men, ages 18 and older.

What do I need to do to volunteer?

Complete the adult volunteer application process and enroll as adult member with the largest all girl organization in the world. Adult membership is $10.00 annually.

When can I volunteer?
Anytime, just contact the Manager of Volunteer Services.

What do I get by being a volunteer?
Training to work with the girls if necessary, ability to impact the lives of girls ages 5-17, ability to be part of the only organization in the nation that is truly focused on the lives of girls. You’ll receive skills, experiences and knowledge that will help you in your personal day-to-day life.

I don’t have a lot of time, can I still volunteer?
Yes. Girl Scouts has volunteer opportunities for everyone, whether you have an hour a week, month or year, we will be able to find a volunteer opportunity that is right for you. Any amount of your time will help us to help girls.

I don’t want to work with girls, but I believe in what the organization does, can I still volunteer?
Yes, we have many volunteer opportunities working with adults.

What kind of volunteer opportunities does Girl Scouts have?
You tell us what your interest is, how much time you are willing to share with the organization, when you are available and we will place you into a volunteer position that meets your needs. We are a volunteer based, non-profit organization and the livelihood of Girl Scouts rests on the commitment of hundreds of volunteer members throughout our 15-county jurisdiction.

Volunteer Recognitions

  • Each year. Many volunteers work hard to provide quality programs to our girls. Recognitions are one way to say "thank you" and show appreciation for thier efforts.
  • Troop Level Recognitions
    A Girl Scout troop will want to thank individuals who have provided support and assistance for the troop's program throughout the year. Certificates of appreciation, plaques, favorable publicity, personal notes, mugs, handmade items, paid Girl Scout memberships or troop-related expenses are some of the many items/ideas for recognizing these special people. Visit our Council Shop for many of the items listed above.
  • Service Unit Recognitions
    The Local Service Unit Team members work to ensure girls in a geographic area have opportunities in Girl Scouting. Their efforts deserve to be recognized.
  • Individually Earned Recognitions
    Leadership Development Pin and Leaves recognize adult members registered as troop leaders, assistant/co-troop leaders or group leaders who have completed the appropriate requirements.
  • Council/ GSUSA Recognitions
    This level of Adult recognitions provide a way of acknowledging individuals for dedication, commitment, and outstanding service in Girl Scouting.
    Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Volunteer awards are given to adults for service to Girl Scout troop/groups or service units. They may be nominated by anyone. Nominations, along with 2 support letters may be forwarded to:

The deadline for Service Unit recognitions is April 1; deadline for Board Approved recognitions is February 1.

NEW ADULT RECOGNITIONS THIS YEAR

  • A. Episodic Volunteer or short term volunteer is an adult who gives time to the organization at the council or national level but volunteers sporadically.

    Name of Award: Community Participation

    The volunteer provides a one-time or a one-day service for the council or GSUSA.
    Recognition: A "Thank You" letter, to be presented to the volunteer and to the volunteer's employer, if desired.

    Name of Award: Citizenship in Girl Scouting

    The volunteer returns for second and third rounds of service and provides support through two or three different short-term venues for the council or GSUSA.
    Recognition: For each round of Service a Certificate may be presented to the volunteer after completion of the volunteer assignment.

    Name of Award: Social Responsibility in Girl Scouting

    The volunteer recommits for a fourth round of short-term service and provides support to the council or GSUSA.
    Recognition: Volunteer Service Pin, to be presented in recognition of this round of volunteer service. The Volunteer Service Pin will be sized (small, medium, large) and color-coded for presentation at this level, based on the completion of subsequent opportunities.

  • B. Progressive Volunteer is an adult volunteer who is involved in Girl Scouting on a continual basis rather than a sporadic basis at the council or national level, and should have opportunities for volunteer development.

    Name of Award-Stage 1: The Girl Scout Volunteer Achievement Award
    for the governance/ governance volunteer this award is presented based on a specific volunteer assignment and may be awarded for initial successful volunteer service completion on a board committee, or for initial successful volunteer service completion on a task group assignment. For the managment/managing volunteer, this award may be presented upon successful completion of the first experience of troop/group leadership.
    Recognition: The Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin, the first recognition award received at this level, providing the foundation of the individual's growth through the adult volunteer experience.

    Name of the Award-Stage 2: The Girl Scout Mentoring Award for the governace or goverance volunteer who has gained sufficient skillls and experience at this level, becomes a coach and/or mentor for a new volunteer.
    Recognition: At Stage 2. a Color-coded key is awarded by the desingated council or GSUSA and added to the chain, which is attached to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development Pin.
    Name of the Award-Stage 3: The Girl Scout Volunteer Executive Award is presented to governanace or management volunteer who has served in a leadership role at the national or council level.
    Recognition: A stage 3 color-coded key awarded by the designated council or GSUSA and added to the Girl Scout Volunteer Development chain.

These awards are approved by a designated council or national staff member or council board member for authorization of the award.

COUNCIL LEVEL AWARDS

  • THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD
    To recognizes the efforts of a Geographic/Service Unit in moving assigned area of audience toward the Council's goals.
    Approval: Council Board of Directors Send completed application to Adult Development Director.

  • APPRECIATION PIN
    To recognize outstanding service to at least one Geographic/Service Unit area.
    Approval: Council Board of Directors Send completed application and 2 letters of endorsement to Adult Development Director.

  • HONOR PIN
    To recognize outstanding service to at least geographic/Service Unit area.
    Approval: Council Board of Directors Send completed application and 3 letters of endorsement to the Adult Development Director.

  • THANKS BADGE
    To recognize outstanding service that benefits the total council or the entire Girl Scout organization.
    Approval:Council Board of Directors; Send Application and 4 letters of endorsement to the Adult Development Director.

  • THANKS BADGE II
    To recognize continued outstanding service by a Thanks Badge recipient.
    Approval: Council Board of Directors; Send Application and 4 letters of endorsement to the Adult Development Director.

SERVICE UNIT LEVEL AWARDS

  • OUTSTANDING LEADER AWARD
    This award is given for outstanding troop/group leadership qualities in the delivery of Girl Scout program to girls that merit recognition by the geographic/service team.
    Approval: Geographic/Service Unit Team Send application, written account of service, and 2 letters of endorsement to the Service Unit manager for Service Unit Team approval; it is then forwarded to the Adult Development Director.

  • OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER AWARD
    For outstanding service beyond the expectations of the position that benefits the geographic! Service Unit and warrants area wide recognition. Given to outstanding delivery-of-service adult other than a leader.
    Approval: Geographic/Service Team Send application and written account of service to the Service Unit Manager for Service Unit Team approval; it is then forwarded to the Adult Development Director.


Nomination forms are available from your Service Unit Manger or the Service Center to recommend any Girl Scout adult deserving of official recognition whether from the service team in the form of Outstanding Volunteer or Outstanding Leader, or from the Council with the Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, Thanks Badge I or II, or Years of Service Pin.

The deadline to submit nominations for Board Approved Recognitions is February 1.
The deadline for Service Unit Awards is April 1.

ADULT RECOGNITIONS

THE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PIN
Purpose: To recognize adult members registered as a troop leaders, assistant troop leaders or group coordinators who have demonstrated competence, shown continuous improvement and continued their training to increase skills in working with girls.
Requirements:

  1. Be an active, registered member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and complete one successful year as a leader, assistant leader or group coordinator (registered in 01, 02, or 04 adult positions.)

  2. Complete First Helps, Basic Troop Leadership I & II training courses.

  3. Participate in at least two meetings or events beyond the troop (council, cluster or service unit).

  4. Secure adult resource persons for the troop who have completed training in first aid and troop camping either by taking training yourself or by finding another trained adults.

Application Procedures: Fill out the Leadership Development Pin application form ; have it signed by the service unit manager and mail to:

The Leadership Development Pin depicts a brown owl on a yellow background. The pin has five hooks to which leaves may be attached in recognition of advanced training (see below). This pin will be awarded at the conclusion of the first year; the extra leaves are added thereafter.

  • LEADERSHIP LEAVES
    Leaders are encouraged to take additional training in subject areas that will increase their skills in working with their troops/groups. The awarding of small green leaves representing additional training will recognize completion of various workshops or other forms of training. One green leaf represents 10 contact hours or 1 Continuing Education Units (CEU) of training. The hours may be completed at one workshop or represent hours of training accumulated at several events over a period. After receiving five green leaves, the recipient may turn them in for one silver leaf. Five silver leaves may be turned in one gold leaf. Your Service Unit manager will receive a letter regarding your achievement and may choose to present the pin at a service unit meeting.

Application Procedures: Fill out the Leadership Development Pin application form ; have it signed by the service unit manager and mail to:
